In April 2026, the International Organization for Standardization ISO published a new version of the environmental management system standard ISO 14001. The new version replaces the previous standard, published in 2015.
The changes compared with the previous version are moderate. In the new version, certain themes, such as climate-related issues and life cycle thinking, have been highlighted more clearly or clarified. If an organization has applied the 2015 version appropriately, the new version does not in practice introduce significant new requirements. However, it is advisable to review the update and assess whether it requires any adjustments to the organization’s own activities.
Will current certification remain valid?
If an organization holds certification according to ISO 14001:2015 and wishes to keep it valid, the certification must be updated to the new version during the transition period. The transition rules have not yet been confirmed, but a three-year transition period is expected. Moving to the new version will require some separate actions, but the detailed requirements are not yet known. At its simplest, the changes may be addressed as part of a normal annual audit.
The standard update will also affect the validity of certifications granted, or to be granted, under ISO 14001:2015. Their validity is limited to end no later than 30 April 2029.
ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 are also being updated
Two other widely used management system standards, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, will also be updated soon. The new ISO 9001 standard is expected this coming autumn, and ISO 45001 in spring 2027. Based on the draft ISO 9001 standard, the changes compared with the previous version are mainly cosmetic. The ISO 45001 draft, in turn, introduces welcome new perspectives, such as broader consideration of wellbeing at work and the diversity of work and workplace communities.
