For an education and training institution, quality is about more than delivering a curriculum. It means having consistent processes, engaged staff, clear responsibilities and a systematic approach to meeting the needs of learners, partners and other stakeholders.
In 2026, Cascade Institute of Hospitality (CIH) in Kenya, has taken an important step in strengthening its approach to quality by achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification from SGS for the provision of education and training leading to the award of diplomas and certificates.

The challenge: building consistency into a growing organization
Cascade Institute of Hospitality (CIH) is a fully fledged hotel school located in Thika Town, Kiambu County, Kenya. Established in 2017, the institute provides competency-based training in the hospitality and tourism industry and is accredited by Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
As the institution continued to develop, CIH recognized the need to strengthen the systems supporting its operations.
ISO 9001 certification gives us a structured framework to deliver more consistent services, improve efficiency and strengthen the confidence of our students and partners.

The decision to implement ISO 9001 was driven by a desire to strengthen the institute’s quality management system, improve consistency in service delivery and enhance customer satisfaction. It also reflected the Institute’s commitment to internationally recognized best practices, accountability and continuous improvement.
The journey to ISO 9001 certification
The implementation process took approximately one year. During this period, Cascade Institute of Hospitality worked through several stages, including developing and implementing its quality management system, training staff, conducting internal reviews and preparing for certification.
One of the key challenges was ensuring that quality requirements were consistently understood and applied across the organization. The institute also needed to adapt some existing processes to align with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and maintain consistency across its operations.
Rather than viewing these challenges simply as compliance requirements, CIH used the implementation process as an opportunity to strengthen its way of working.
The experience helped foster a culture in which quality became a shared responsibility, supported by staff awareness, defined processes and a focus on continual improvement.
What the SGS audit revealed
The SGS certification audit provided Cascade with an opportunity to assess how effectively its quality management system was working in practice.
The audit highlighted several important aspects of the institute’s approach, including its structured management system, documented processes, staff involvement, monitoring activities and focus on continuous improvement.
The audit also reinforced an important lesson: having documented processes is only part of effective quality management. Consistent implementation, staff engagement and ongoing monitoring are equally important.
For Cascade Institute of Hospitality, the audit helped identify areas where processes could be further strengthened and reinforced the importance of following established procedures consistently.
SGS brought valuable expertise and a fresh perspective throughout the certification process. Their audit helped us identify practical areas for improvement and reinforced our commitment to maintaining high standards.

From certification to continuous improvement
Achieving certification marked an important milestone, but for CIH, ISO 9001 is not the end of the journey.
The implementation and audit process has already contributed to several practical improvements, including greater operational discipline, improved process efficiency and increased staff awareness of quality requirements.
Most importantly, the process has strengthened the institute’s confidence in its ability to deliver consistent and reliable education and training services.
By embedding quality management into its day-to-day operations, Cascade Institute of Hospitality has established a stronger foundation for responding to customer needs, monitoring performance and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Cascade Institute of Hospitality has built a clear and structured quality management system, with strong staff involvement and a good foundation for monitoring and continual improvement.

A stronger foundation for hospitality education
Cascade Institute of Hospitality’s ISO 9001:2015 certification demonstrates its commitment to providing quality, holistic education and training to young people and supporting their development into economically independent and responsible citizens.
ISO 9001:2015 provides a structured framework for consistency, accountability and continual improvement. For an institution preparing students for careers in the hospitality and tourism sector, a systematic approach to quality provides a strong foundation for delivering reliable training and continuously improving the learner experience.
