AI-Driven Safety Across Multiple Laboratories
PPE Guard AI is a computer-vision–based technology that automatically supervises the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in real time. The system checks whether employees are applying the correct PPE for the specific zones they work in, ensuring strict compliance with SGS safety protocols.
The software is now operating across three key laboratories in Tanzania:
- Dar es Salaam Multilab, covering agriculture, oil & gas and OCM testing
- Mwanza Geochemistry Laboratory
- Mwanza Environmental, Health and Safety Laboratory
By automating supervision, PPE Guard AI supports our teams in maintaining safe working conditions while allowing supervisors to focus on technical excellence and client support.
Smart Tracking for All PPE Types
The system detects and monitors all essential PPE items, including:
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Respirators
- Ear plugs
- Face shields
- Safety vests and laboratory coats
- Aluminium coats
Different laboratory zones require different combinations of PPE. PPE Guard AI recognizes these zone-based requirements and verifies that each employee is properly equipped. It also monitors time spent in high-risk zones, helping ensure that exposure limits are never exceeded.
When any non-compliance occurs, the system automatically generates notifications, enabling timely intervention, behavior based safety discussion and helping prevent incidents before they occur.
Turning Safety Data into Insight
Beyond real-time supervision, PPE Guard AI provides dashboards to visualize trends, track improvements and identify where additional training or adjustments may be needed.
This data-driven transparency strengthens our safety culture and enhances operational efficiency.
Leading Digital Innovation in Africa
Developed in-house by SGS, PPE Guard AI was initially rolled out in Eastern Europe, the Caspian region and the Middle East. It is now being implemented in Africa. Tanzania is among the first in Africa – alongside South Africa, Kenya and Egypt – to adopt this pioneering technology.
