Annual Conference 2020: Shipboard Environmental Testing

SGS will be presenting a webinar on shipboard environmental testing at The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) Annual Conference 2020.

With new and emerging environmental regulations on ships, multiple types of sampling and analysis are required. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated additional controls to ensure the safety and security of ships’ crew members and passengers. Join our webinar, and listen to industry experts Guillaume Drillet, Lisa Drake and Vladimiro Bonamin discuss important issues around shipboard environmental testing.

Objectives

This webinar will cover:

  • Shipboard environmental testing
  • COVID-19 cleaning and disinfection
  • Commissioning testing of ballast water management systems
  • Forthcoming guidelines for monitoring exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers)

Presenters

Lisa Drake, PhD – Hub Manager for SGS Global Marine Services

Lisa Drake has more than 20 years’ experience as a scientist manager. Specifically, her work has been at the intersection of science and technology used to address environmental problems. She is a Hub Manager for the Global Marine Services group at SGS, which is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing, and certification organization. SGS helps shipowners and operators comply with environmental regulations, leading to cleaner oceans and environments. As the Business Area Manager for the Americas, additionally, she is highly engaged with the maritime and scientific communities by collecting and publishing data, as well as serving or leading technical working groups.

After earning Master’s and PhD degrees in Oceanography at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Virginia, USA), she conducted research on invasions biology, maritime policy with respect to ship-borne invasive species, seagrass ecology, bio-optics of surfaces, and using artistic, scientific images to teach life science and visual art concepts to elementary and high-school students. Following that, she taught marine science at the US Coast Guard (USCG) Academy. Next, she joined the US Naval Research Laboratory. There, as the first Section Head of Code 6137 (Marine Biological Engineering), she directed an interdisciplinary team of biologists, engineers, and electrochemists to conduct research in support of the US Coast Guard, US Environmental Protection Agency, and Maritime Administration missions. These efforts were recognized with the 2017 Arthur S. Flemming Medal for Exceptional Federal Service in Applied Science and Engineering.

Guillaume Drillet, PhD – Regional Manager for Environment, Health & Safety Global Marine Services at SGS

Guillaume Drillet has 19 years' experience working with environmental sciences in the public and private sectors. He holds an MSc with a major in coastal resources management (France) and a PhD in life sciences from Denmark. In 2011, he received the Young Elite Scientist Award from the Danish Ministry of Independent research.

Guillaume supports ship-owners and ship managers with their compliance monitoring and commissioning testing (Vessel General Permit, MARPOL, exhaust cleaning systems, ballast water management systems, Sanitation surveys, etc.). Since 2016, he has served as Chair of the Global TestNet, an organization supporting the robust testing of solutions to manage bio-invasions from shipping (ballast water and biofouling). In recent years, he has been deeply involved in the revision of the guidelines for the testing of ballast water management systems, as well as the development of the methodology for the issuance of exemptions according to Regulation A4 of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention.

Guillaume is also a consultant in the IMO Roster (IMO ITCP and IMO-NORAD MEPSEAS projects), addressing the Ballast Water and Anti-fouling System Conventions. After three successful years as President of the World Aquaculture Society-Asian Pacific Chapter (WAS-APC), Guillaume has recently elected director of the board of the WAS, which is the largest aquaculture inter-professional organization. About IMarEST Annual Conference 2020

Building on last year’s inaugural event, the 2020 Annual Conference will feature multiple streams covering many of the hottest topics in the marine realm, from the challenges of decarbonization and a wider shift to greener, more sustainable ways of operating to developments in the naval sector and the outlook for autonomous systems.

Although the change to a virtual format was made primarily in response to Covid-19, it will allow international members who ordinarily would be unable to travel to London and attend in person to fully take part in proceedings and bring a global voice to the event.

To maximize interaction and engagement, we encourage all delegates to download the new event app, which will help you keep track of what’s happening when, take part in live polls, access supporting content and network with other participants and sponsors.
