From the 2nd till the 6th of May, SGS, as coordinator of the CRANE 4.0 project, hosted the Train the-trainer session at its headquarters in Valencia. The training week is a crucial moment in the project implementation, in fact, the participants from Greece, Italy, Romania and Spain will soon implement the pilot training in which 55 crane operators will be involved.
The training week at SGS Valencia headquarters was a great success and a gathered representatives of the crane industry such as crane operators and owners of crane companies, representatives of the training and education sectors and health and safety at work experts.
The scope of the training was to give the participants all the necessary tools to become CRANE 4.0 ambassadors.
The partnership sought to transfer the knowledge about the blended-learning methodology to the participants as a way to build their capacity and guarantee their independence as CRANE 4.0 trainers.
The training has been articulated in five days and covered all the Modules of the Didactic Manual and the 4 Virtual Reality scenarios with the 8 activities developed under the second Intellectual Output of the project. At the beginning of the training, we facilitated a brainstorming and interactive workshop to understand the background of the participants and get to know each other. The final session was indeed dedicated to reflecting on the training week and understand how to reproduce this training in the next months.
The partners adopted a learning-by-doing methodology – we gave the participants a first inception speech regarding the VR activities and then we tried to make them go through the scenarios autonomously. By acting as trainees, their understanding of how to facilitate the blended training has been enhanced.
Thanks to the questionnaires we have administered during the training week, we could understand that the VR equipment and gamified learning are still quite unknown among the construction and crane sectors. The participants were very enthusiastic about the multiple opportunities that VR gives to their sector, especially in terms of cost reduction and safety measures. But there is still little confidence with the use of these tools among adult users. On the contrary, younger participants were among the most confident and agile users who found no problems in using the equipment.
The evaluation of the training methodology and of the material developed by the project were pivotal for the partners to adjust the content developed so far, create additional support material for unexperienced users and be more aware of the usability and adaptability of the VR scenarios.
