China New Product Standard – GB/T 33734-2017 < Woven Bedding for Infants >

SafeGuardSAugust 01, 2017

GB/T 33734-2017< Woven Bedding for Infants > will be implemented on December 1, 2017. It is the first product standard for woven bedding for infants.

Since bedding articles are a type of product with prolonged direct skin contact, their quality largely affects the health and safety of humans, especially infants. However, at present, there is no specific standard for woven bedding for infants in China. In order to effectively ensure the health and safety of infants, the China National Standardization Technical Committees for Home-textiles has recently published the national standard GB/T 33734-2017<Woven Bedding for Infants>. This standard will be implemented on December 1, 2017.This will standardize the production, sales and marketing of woven bedding for infants, protect the legal rights and interests of consumers and provide guidance for the woven bedding industry. The significant technical points of GB/T 33734-2017 are summarized as below.

1. Scope

This standard is applicable to bedding for infants (for ages not older than 36 months), which are mainly made of woven fabrics and include but are not limited to bed sheets, quilt covers, quilts, pillows, pillowcases, cushions, cushion covers, bumpers, mattress covers and  wrappers.

2. Quality level

This standard includes three quality levels: superior grade, first grade and qualified grade. This enables companies to choose the suitable quality level based on their product’s quality.

3. Product quality

Product quality includes safety performance, physical and chemical properties, appearance quality and technical quality.

4. Safety performance

The requirements of safety performance are given in Table 1.

Note: For woven bedding for infants, it is not recommended to use flame-retardant finishing. If flame retardant finishing of cotton fabric is carried out, it must comply with related Chinese regulations and mandatory standards.

a Does not apply to undyed and bleached products.

b Does not apply to original and bleached products; the technical requirement of first grade and qualified grade can be reduced by a half grade for dark colours. According to GB/T 4841.3, color which is greater than 1/12 dyestuffs dyeing standard depth colour card can be defined as a dark colour.

5. Physical and chemical properties

Physical and chemical properties are given in Table 2. Silk quilts, down & feather quilts, down & feather mattresses, down & feather sleeping bags, down & feather pillows and cushions shall comply with the requirement of their individual product standards.
