Ensuring safe and reliable bunker fuel operations in Egypt

February 16, 2026

Bunker fuel quality and quantity are critical to safe marine operations, cost control and regulatory compliance. Shipowners, operators and fuel buyers need independent assurance that the fuel delivered meets contractual specifications and international standards.

At SGS Egypt, we support the marine and energy sectors with comprehensive testing, inspection and verification services designed to reduce risk and strengthen confidence across the bunker fuel supply chain.

How does SGS support bunker fuel operations?

SGS provides independent Bunker Quantity Survey (BQS) through IFIA-certified inspectors, ensuring accurate measurement of delivered fuel and helping to prevent disputes related to quantity and transfer operations.

In addition, our laboratory in Egypt, fully compliant with ISO/IEC 17025, performs testing of marine fuels and petroleum products in accordance with ISO 8217 requirements (up to 2024). This enables shipowners and operators to verify fuel quality, assess compliance and make informed operational decisions.

Why is independent testing and inspection essential?

Bunker fuel issues can lead to operational disruptions, equipment damage and increased costs. Independent verification helps to:

  • Confirm fuel quality against ISO 8217 specifications
  • Verify delivered quantities through certified inspection
  • Reduce commercial and operational risk
  • Support compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements

By combining field inspection with accredited laboratory testing, SGS delivers a reliable, end-to-end approach to bunker fuel assurance.

SGS perspective

Independent inspection and testing play a vital role in protecting our clients’ operations. Through Bunker Quantity Surveys conducted by IFIA-certified inspectors, and ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory testing in accordance with ISO 8217, we help our customers manage risk, ensure compliance, and operate with greater confidence
