EU 2021 Safety Gate Product Recalls Report

According to data released by the EU’s Safety gate – the rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products, in 2021, toys were the second most recalled product category in the EU. The list was topped by motor vehicles. Due to the pandemic and the need for PPE the number of recalled protective mask was significant (6% of all recalls).

EU Member States exchange and publish information about dangerous product recalls in their countries using the Safety Gate platform – 2,142 alerts were recorded in 2021. In recent years, the number of alerts has remained stable.

The most frequently recalled product categories and the type of risk from 2021 are presented in Figure 1 and 2, respectively.

To better follow up on dangerous products in e-commerce the European Commission has developed a new tool to trace dangerous products offered for sale online.

EU Safety Gate alerts can be view and searched on the EU Safety Gate website. There is also an option to subscribe to weekly alerts.

To recognize best practice in the industry, the European Commission has decided to grant Product Safety Awards to companies for innovation and business practices* that ‘go the extra mile’ in product safety.

SGS publishes the latest unsafe product notifications in Europe, the US, and Australia weekly, for free, on its Product Recalls online platform.
