Carbon footprint and CBAM in Algeria: Supporting exporters on the path to international competitiveness

17. Jul 2026

As international markets continue to strengthen environmental regulations, carbon emissions have become a key factor influencing global trade. For Algerian manufacturers and exporters, understanding their carbon footprint and preparing for the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is no longer just a compliance requirement – it is becoming a strategic business priority.

On 30 June 2026, The World Trade Center Algeria organized the conference "Carbon Footprint and Access to International Markets: From Compliance to Competitiveness", bringing together industry experts and businesses to discuss the evolving environmental landscape and its impact on international trade.

As part of the event, the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Department of SGS Qualitest Algeria contributed to the discussions alongside Systain Algeria, the event's technical partner, sharing practical insights into how organizations can prepare for emerging environmental requirements.

Understanding the impact of CBAM on Algerian exporters

One of the conference's key topics was the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the European Union's framework designed to introduce carbon pricing on selected imported products based on their greenhouse gas emissions.

The session explored how the regulation will affect exporters supplying products to the European market, highlighting the implementation timeline, reporting obligations and the importance of reliable emissions data.

Rather than viewing CBAM solely as a regulatory obligation, the discussions emphasized how early preparation can strengthen competitiveness and support long-term access to international markets.

Turning environmental compliance into a competitive advantage

Organizations that understand and manage their carbon footprint are better positioned to respond to changing customer expectations, regulatory developments and sustainability commitments.

During the conference, Akaour Imane, Environmental Engineer at SGS Qualitest Algeria, highlighted the importance of helping organizations understand environmental requirements and supporting them throughout their sustainability journey. By combining technical expertise with practical guidance, businesses can transform regulatory challenges into opportunities for growth and market differentiation.

The event also featured Jerónimo Casas de Gonzalo, Global Product Manager I&E at SGS and an international expert in decarbonization and environmental regulations, who shared global perspectives on CBAM implementation and the role of carbon management in international trade.
