ADNOC Embraces Sustainability, Reliability and Process Safety for Aging Facilities

February 09, 2024

In this insightful article, Khalfan Mohamed Abdouli, Manager Integrity & Reliability, Asset Integrity Division, ADNOC (UAE), shares best practices of ADNOC in managing their assets integrity.

ADNOC aims to utilize advanced technologies and tools, including artificial intelligence and digital solutions, to position itself at the forefront of the industry. The company’s focus extends to managing its aging facilities, ensuring they adhere to world-class standards of integrity and reliability throughout their entire lifecycle.

Investment in green credentials

ADNOC Gas has developed an agile and robust Asset Integrity and Reliability Management System, which includes clear policies, defined operating integrities, execution procedures, and defined roles and responsibilities. Now the company is focusing on expanding and upgrading the framework to encompass the concept of Green Reliability and develop a reliability index that links this concept with investment decisions.

Fighting corrosion

In harsh environments like Das Island, corrosion poses a constant challenge. The inspection of static equipment, visual identification of painting issues in a timely manner, and accurate analysis require significant time and effort from the workforce.

For this challenge, ADNOC Gas achieved success in two opportunities: AI visual inspection, as well as Advance NDT Tools, specifically Wave UT and phase T-ray technologies.

Mitigating varnish formation

The second challenge is the loss of opportunities due to varnish formation in major machinery, including both steam and gas turbines.

To address this issue permanently, the company implemented new technology solutions, specifically Purifier technologies (such as Electro physical separation, ESP, BCP, and Filtration), in the super-heated (SH) Steam Turbines.

Use of 3D Printing

Also, ADNOC Gas is using 3D printing for spare parts, which helps decrease both cost and time in the maintenance activities.
The company has established an in-house 3D printing facility on-site (Das Island) and identified over 30,000 inventory items that can be converted into virtual items.

Unification of Process Safety Framework

ADNOC recognized the need for a unified approach to AIPS, and as a result the company introduced the ADNOC AIPSM Framework to provide a consistent risk-based approach to Process safety.

ADNOC Gas has developed the Process Safety Dashboard tool: it monitors and measures the performance in different leading and lagging KPIs to ensure how far the company is from LOPC and process safety incidents, with the ability to link the process safety index with leaks events on site.

Another tool is AIPS risk Register Portal, which captures all assets that are considered to have high risk for process safety or production loss.

Collaboration

Lastly, ADNOC recognizes the importance of collaboration. Staying together, communicating with one another, and collaborating is better for everyone.
