Since the Renewable Energy Directive (Directive (EU) 2018/2001), known as RED II, came into force on July 1 2021, solid and gaseous biomass is now also subject to sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction requirements, in addition to liquid biomass. This applies to any business or organization which generates electricity and/or heat from biomass.

If the relevant proof is not provided, the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) 2021 subsidy will be forfeit, or penalties will become due.

Certification against either the REDcert or SURE standards provide this proof.
