Georgia Revises Legislation on Food Contact Plastics

SafeGuardSHardgoodsFebruary 18, 2026

SG 024/26

Georgia updates resolution on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

In 2022, Georgia issued Resolution No 304/2022, approving the nation’s technical regulation on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food (the Technical Regulation, SafeGuardS 126/22). This comprehensive piece of legislation is based on European Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on food contact plastics (current consolidated version to March 2025 for reference) and became effective on January 1, 2026.

In 2025, Georgia issued two amendments to its Technical Regulation:

  • Resolution No. 503 of November 13, 2025, (Resolution No. 503/2025) adds compliance control criteria to fulfil the requirements of the Technical Regulation and introduces several transitional provisions:
    • Except for the items mentioned in point two below, non-compliant food contact plastics that were placed on the market before January 1, 2026, may continue to remain on the market until December 31, 2026
    • The following items may remain on the market until March 31, 2026, if they were placed on the market before January 1, 2026:
      • Plastic forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks, plates, straws and beverage stirrers
      • Food containers made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and their lids
      • EPS cups and their lids
    • Catering establishments may use disposable plastic food containers and cups for ready-made foods until June 30, 2026
  • Resolution No. 637 of December 30, 2025, (Resolution No. 637/2025) further clarifies the compliance-control criteria mentioned above

Resolution Nos. 503/2025 and 637/2025 became effective on January 1, 2026.
