More and more countries are allowing cannabis to be used for medicinal purposes. Medical cannabis has been permitted for use with prescription in Germany since 2017, creating a need for producers to supply pharmacists and physicians with the newly legalized drug.

What qualifies as medical grade cannabis? In March 2017, the national German legislature expanded the options for prescribing medical cannabis products by passing a law amending provisions under the Narcotics Law and other regulations. Cannabis products must now comply with the relevant requirements laid down under Medicinal Law, including GMP and GDP, in addition to those laid down under Narcotics law.

The following requirements apply to medical cannabis in Germany:

  • The Cannabis Agency is responsible for ensuring that only medical grade cannabis is supplied
  • The relevant requirements based on the underlying legal framework (including Pharmacopoeias) and the corresponding GMP, GDP and GACP guidelines must be complied with
  • Cannabis for medical purposes is also subject to the provisions of the German Narcotics Law, which is the responsibility of the German Federal Opium Agency

Join us to learn more about the legal requirements and procedures from the 8th European GMP Conference.

We look forward to seeing you there.
