The process of extractive metallurgy involves the reduction in size of the metal ore – either physically or chemically, or by using an electrolytic method. A variety of processes can be applied, including: concentration (e.g. flotation), thickening, dried, hydrometallurgy (or ‘hydromet’) and electro-obtaining and -refining.
