RoHS Testing

Increasing regulation on the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment places responsibility on manufacturers, retailers and suppliers to prove that their products comply.

Third party RoHS testing from SGS enables you to ensure compliance to the relevant EU RoHS directive.

All new products need to be monitored for the concentration of restricted substances including, lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).

Your challenge is to ensure that no product exceeds the RoHS limits of 0.1% or 1,000ppm (except for cadmium, which is limited to 0.01% or 100ppm) by weight of homogenous material. We offer different ways of testing:

Non destructive analysis

We use several non destructive XRF (X-Ray Florescence) methods.

Wet chemical analysis

If high levels of restricted substances are found further tests may be carried out using wet chemical analysis. This restricted substances testing method offers accurate results and verifies any anomalies found during XRF analysis.

XRF screening

We can get a quick indication of the presence of hazardous substances and their location within the product with XRF screening. This testing method is particularly suited to gaining a quick overview of the end product.

In the EU, RoHS is regulated by directive 2002/95/EC. It excludes all non-compliant products from the market. Similar regulations exist in other areas of the world including China, Japan, South Korea, USA, Norway and Turkey. With a global network of 26 accredited RoHS labs and over 1,000 specialists in the field partner with SGS for all your RoHS testing needs.
