Recovered Paper and Paperpack

SGS provides an inspection and testing service for the verification of sorted recovered paper and paperstock, in accordance with industry bodies including the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) and international regulations.

You can take advantage of our global network and reputation for independence and accuracy by using our services to verify the content and quality of your waste paper.

Our services conform to regulations such as the European standard EN 643, the International Association of the De-inking Industry (Ingede) Method 7 and 8, and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (Isri) Paper Stock 2009 and PS-2009. Verification of this kind is a requirement of the import regulations associated with many countries. In addition, our standardized reporting takes into consideration the industry regulations governing the trade of this commodity, making deliveries less prone to dispute.

Using visual and mechanical verification, we confirm the weight, loading, grade, quality, moisture, baling condition and packing of sorted and baled recovered paper. This defines the grade of the waste paper and limits the presence of objectionable and/or prohibited materials (e.g. metal, plastic waxed paper, sand, string, textiles, wood) in the cargo.

Our inspection also ensures that we prevent (or at least minimize) the packing of:

  • Carbonless copy paper
  • Contaminated waste from hospitals
  • Covering materials
  • Mixed garbage
  • Stained sacks with foodstuffs
  • Waste paper from households containing used hygienic paper
  • Waste paper from libraries, offices and so on containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
