Food Radioactivity Testing

Food radioactivity testing from SGS – ensuring food and its ingredients are safe to eat and meet international radionuclide limits.

Nuclear disasters, such as Fukushima in 2011 and Chernobyl in 1986, have increased government, industry and consumer concerns about the risk of food and drinking water becoming contaminated by radiation. Our state of the art radionuclide testing laboratories are ISO/IEC 17025 accredited and can help you detect and measure any relevant radioactive contamination of your products.

How do radioactive isotopes enter the food chain?

There are basically three ways that contamination in foodstuff can occur:

  • Surface contamination radioactive particles settle on the surfaces of crops that are then consumed by humans or animals
  • Ground contamination – plants and crops may metabolize contaminated ground and soil water
  • Water contamination – marine and freshwater seafood may accumulate radioactive particles from contaminated water

Our testing services assure you of both product and personal safety while at the same time minimizing the risk of liability claims.

What radioactive elements can be measured?

All radioactive elements are measurable and we can measure radiation released with an instrument such as a Geiger counter, gamma spectrometer, liquid scintillation or proportional counter.
