Extending Forestry and Biomass Certification Services with Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) Accreditation

December 15, 2025

We have expanded our forestry and biomass certification services with SBP accreditation, strengthening assurance for responsibly sourced biomass worldwide.

A milestone for our sustainability services

Following weeks of dedication and collaboration between our North America and Vietnam teams, this ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) recognition reflects our continuously evolving IMPACT NOW for sustainability portfolio.

Strengthening assurance for responsibly sourced biomass

Christian Kobel, Global Business Manager for Forestry, Timber and Paper, commented: “A huge congratulations to the teams – we’re delighted to become an accredited SBP certification body.

“Our decades of sustainability expertise on the global stage will help us expand SBP’s reach while strengthening assurance for responsibly sourced biomass worldwide.”

What SBP certification covers

SBP is a globally recognized certification scheme to ensure that biomass used for energy, industrial and other applications is sourced legally, responsibly and sustainably.

Its comprehensive framework applies to a wide range of bio-based products, including:

  • Wood pellets and chips
  • Biochar and biocarbon
  • Other processed wood-based materials

By certifying these products, SBP promotes transparency, traceability and best practices across biomass supply chains.

Supporting regulatory compliance and the low-carbon transition

SBP certification helps organizations demonstrate compliance with key regulatory requirements, including alignment with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED). It also offers a voluntary module to support compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

Christian Kobel added: “By certifying these products, SBP drives transparency, traceability and best practices across your supply chain, supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy and reinforcing sustainability and legal assurance in global biomass markets. We look forward to supporting organizations through this accredited service.”
