To demonstrate the effectiveness of using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve lab efficiencies for asbestos analysis, SGS partnered with Thermo Fisher Scientific to develop a tool to automatically identify suspect fibers using the Thermo Scientific™ Phenom™ XL G2 Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and a fully integrated AI application made by SGS. The results show that AI is an exciting and viable approach to the future of asbestos analysis and can surpass a human analyst in finding fibers containing asbestos in samples.
