Five Questions Shaping the Future of FPSO, FLNG and FSRU Projects

November 02, 2026

As the floating energy industry prepares to meet in Shanghai, project leaders need to know more than just how quickly floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO), floating liquified natural gas (FLNG) and floating storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) assets can be delivered.

They must also make decisions that will protect schedule certainty, manage supplier risk, reduce carbon exposure, strengthen operational readiness and preserve long-term asset value.

These five questions can help project teams test whether their strategies are robust enough for the next phase of floating energy development.

  1. How can projects protect delivery certainty?

Compressed schedules and cost pressure increase the impact of late equipment, quality failures and poorly managed interfaces. Earlier assurance and better visibility can help teams act before disruption spreads.

  2. Is the supply chain resilient enough?

A broader supplier base can improve capacity and competitiveness, but it also introduces variability. Supplier evaluation, inspection and expediting help maintain consistent standards across global manufacturing locations.

  3. What does credible carbon performance look like?

Credible carbon performance means establishing reliable baselines, identifying practical improvements and independently verifying progress, while keeping commercial performance in view. Without such discipline, carbon claims can become difficult to compare, defend or improve.

  4. Is operational readiness being built in early enough?

Fabrication quality, process safety, commissioning and asset integrity should be connected from the outset. First oil is only the beginning of the performance story.

  5. Can assets adapt to an uncertain future?

Changing markets, regulations and field requirements increase the importance of life extension, modification, redeployment and responsible decommissioning.

The strongest projects will connect assurance across the full lifecycle rather than manage schedule, quality, carbon and integrity as separate issues.
