On August 20, 2021 Administration of market supervision and Standardization Administration of the PRC issued shanks for footwear product standard GB/T 28011-2021 which becomes effective on March 01, 2022. GB/T 28011-2021 replaces previous edition GB/T 28011-2011.

The new standard is applicable to metal and non-metal shanks for footwear sizes  ≥200, including boots. The standard is not applicable to shanks made of wood or other similar materials.

Main Technical Changes

The main modifications between GB/T 28011-2021 and GB/T 28011-2011:

  • the title of standard
  • the “scope”;
  • added the definitions of “Type I shank” “Type L shank” “Type Y shank”;
  • the product classification;
  • the requirements for “Marking”;
  • the requirements for “Appearance quality”;
  • the requirements for “Longitudinal stiffness”;
  • the requirements for “Fatigue resistance”;
  • the requirements for “Hardness”;
  • the requirements for “Bending resistance”;
  • added the length measurement figure for  “Type I shank” “Type L shank” “Type Y shank”;
  • the test method of “Bending resistance”;
  • the method of “Judgment of result”.

1MarkingThe suitable effective heel height or range of the effective suitable heel heights shall be marked on shank. Unit: mm.
If the shank is taken out from finished shoe, no need to inspect the marking. 
2Appearance qualityThe surface of shank shall be free of burr, rust, crack, bending deformation, smooth and flat. The bars, nail holes and forks shall be installed on correct positions.
3Size ShanksComply with GB/T 28011-2021, 5.3
4Longitudinal StiffnessComply with GB/T 28011-2021, 5.4, Table 3 for metal shanks;
For non-metal shank, comply with requirements below:

7Bending ResistanceThe metal shank shall be subjected to the 180°bending test without breaking.
Non-metal shank needs not to be tested.

Note:

  • GB/T 28011-2011 <Shanks for footwear> is applicable to metal shanks.
  • GB/T 28011-2021 <Shanks for footwear> is applicable to metal shanks and non-metal shanks, and not applicable to shanks made by wooden or other similar materials.
