SGS New Robot Lab Assistant Delivers Samples During the Pandemic

October 20, 2020

SGS Central Chemical Lab (CCL) in Guangzhou, China, has found an innovative way to navigate the global pandemic, ensure social distancing and speed up sample turnaround times with their new robot assistant, Wisdom.

Wisdom, an automated guided vehicle (AVG), is the new lab assistant for the Sample Weighing Team. Its job is to deliver a wide range of test samples with high-turnaround times from team to team, so they can maintain physical distance throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michael Tso, Project Manager at the SGS Central Chemical Lab, explains: “The job of the Weighing Team is to weigh samples from a range of consumer products – such as footwear, clothes and electrical and electronic products. These samples need to be delivered to various pre-treatment teams with a quick turnaround for analysis.

“Before, we would deliver samples out every two hours. However, social distancing requirements have made deliveries more problematic. With Wisdom, we can deliver the samples every 10 to 15 minutes – vastly increasing turnaround times, while minimizing social contact."

With a dedicated team of 357 experts, the SGS Central Chemical Lab in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China, provides a wide range of chemical testing services for a number of sectors – from consumer goods and food to traditional Chinese medicine and cosmetics. Wisdom is helping the laboratory to ensure essential service continuity during the pandemic, while keeping staff safe.
