Speed Camera Calibration and Verification Services
SGS Traffic Systems provide independent testing and verification services for road safety enforcement technology. SGS recognises the importance of verifying the accuracy and reliability of enforcement technology to traceable national standards as a basis for improving consumer confidence in the enforcement program in place.

SGS Traffic Systems Technology Services
Sensor Evaluation – One of the most critical components in road safety enforcement technology are the vehicle sensors. SGS conducts sensor evaluations to ensure the sensors are operating within the manufacturer-specified operational parameters. SGS has particular experience with inductive loop, piezoelectric, radar, and optical vehicle sensors.
- Speed Accuracy – To ensure speed accuracy of the system, SGS compares the system recorded speed against an independent speed measurement device. A range of different devices are used depending on site specific requirements. All devices are calibrated to a traceable national standard. Accuracy can also be tested in the laboratory using system specific vehicle simulators.
- Speed Reliability – To ensure repeatability of speed measurement over a large volume of traffic, an independent speed measurement device is used to log vehicle speeds. Speed data is correlated between the two systems and any differences analysed for errors. Large volume on site comparisons can highlight shortcomings that may not be revealed by laboratory vehicle simulation.
- Calibration Services – SGS also offers calibration services for speed measurement devices.
- Traffic Signal Evaluation – System traffic signal performance and timing is evaluated using a signal controller simulator and calibrated timing system. The system phase times are verified against an independent timing device. System performance during a range of traffic signal fault conditions can also be evaluated.
- Type Approval – The tests listed previously can also be completed as part of type approval for road safety enforcement systems. In addition, SGS can undergo electromagnetic compatibility, environmental, vehicle interference, and electrical safety testing as part of the approvals process.
- Fault Finding Services – SGS can investigate and analyse any reported discrepancies with camera systems.
Example
The Department of Justice in Victoria, Australia engaged SGS as independent testing consultants to investigate claims that certain speed cameras on Melbourne’s Western Ring Road and CityLink Free-flow Tollway were producing inaccurate speed readings. SGS’ investigation resulted in a number of recommendations that have improved the road safety and speed enforcement programs in Victoria. One of the recommendations was to enhance the maintenance and testing regime of the fixed digital road safety cameras / speed cameras, and SGS worked closely with the Department of Justice to achieve these improvements. The Victorian Department of Justice has recognised the importance of an independent expert assessment of the road safety enforcement system, to provide security in the knowledge that the systems are operating within manufacturer’s specifications and regulatory requirements. These assessments may also be used to provide independent expert evidence for use in court.
