Corporate - 29/08/07 SGS announces the acquisition of ECOSERV SGS is pleased to announce the acquisition of ECOSERV, a leading South African environmental services provider, and its subsidiary Annegarn Environmental Research (AER). ECOSERV is the foremost supplier of air monitoring and occupational health services in Southern Africa, with a good mix of mining, industrial and governmental clients. The group works with its clients to improve environmental and occupational health conditions in their companies, providing services ranging from the monitoring of air quality and stack emissions, to workplace monitoring, impact assessments and the provision of more general consulting services. Formed in 1993 and privately owned, it employs 43 staff in Durban, Johannesburg, Richards Bay and Cape Town. ECOSERV generated revenues in excess of ZAR 20 million (CHF 3.3 million) in 2006. Through this acquisition, SGS gains the expertise to enable it to partner with customers to help them understand and fulfil their obligations under the new National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (No. 39 of 2004) in South Africa. Furthermore, ECOSERV has developed the ability to operate monitoring equipment in remote locations – a capability which will be useful across much of the SGS network. ECOSERV’s business complements the existing SGS environmental labs in Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, positioning SGS to exploit the fast-growing South African environmental services sector, and making it the leading environmental services supplier in sub-Saharan Africa.
