Product Certification – Lifts and Elevators
The Objective
Manufacturers, importers and installers introducing lifts and its components into the European Union need to assure that their equipment meet the requirements of the European Directives for Lifts and have to be assessed and approved by a notified body.
The CE-marking is the visible symbol indicating that lifts or elevators and its safety components satisfy the requirements of the directive and have been subject to the appropriate conformity assessment procedures.
Directive 95/16/EC applies only to new lifts; while the safety of existing lifts (those installed before the Lifts Directive came into force) is subject to national regulations.

Our Services
The following steps offered by SGS can be obtained as single service, but are often part of a Conformity or/and Risk Assessment Package.
- Design Verification of lifts: SGS verifies the design of lifts according to design codes. The objective of this service is to evaluate manufacturers design, drawings and specifications against the applicable codes, standards, purchase specification and statutory requirements. The service includes verification of stress calculations, working drawings, equipment specifications, control systems and equipment’s ability to perform as intended.
- Type-approval of lifts: SGS performs series of testing and inspections against a specification, code, directive and industry standards for lifts and its components. The service may include design verification, inspection, non-destructive and destructive tests.
- Inspections and audits of lifts: Statutory inspection applies after a complete or almost complete assembly / installation of the device and at regular intervals thereafter. Inspections can be carried out as well after conversion, modification or modernization of the equipment. A typical inspection involves complete examination of mechanical, structural, electrical, and safety systems that include wire ropes and chains.
- Testing of lifts: SGS Industrial Services provides independent witnessing of equipment performance tests to guarantee that performance values are met. The service may include verification of test reports for routine tests, witness test and a review of performance calculations. Typical operations performed on the equipment include load testing and operational testing to reassure that the unit is functioning properly.
