Product Certification – New Industrial Machinery
The Objective
As manufacturer or importer of industrial machinery, you need approvals for positioning your products successfully in the international market. These approvals can be granted according to the compliance to product standards.
In the European Union manufacturers and importers need to assure that their equipment meet the requirements of the following Directives:
The compliance with these directives is generally obtained through the use of independent, third party testing organizations, so called Notified Bodies like SGS. The manufacturer has to place a CE Mark on its product and has to make sure that the equipment is accompanied by the proper documentation (i.e., EU-Type Test Certificate).
In North-America, the CE Mark is normally not accepted. Any installation in this region may be subject to one or more additional federal, state and local installation requirements, or codes.
In other regions of the world, there are other local regulations which have to be followed. As manufacturer or importer of industrial goods you are responsible for verifying whether a particular product falls within the scope these regulations.

- Design Verification of industrial machinery: SGS verifies the design of machinery equipment and its safety components according to design codes. - Type-approval of machinery: The object of the service is to carry out a series of tests and inspections to establish conformity. The tests are carried out against a specification, code, directive or industry standard that will clearly identify the criteria for acceptance. The service may include inspection, Non-Destructive Testing, and Materials Testing.
- Inspections and audits of machinery: Statutory inspection applies after complete or almost complete assembly/installation of the device and then at regular intervals thereafter. Inspections can be carried out also after conversation, modification or modernization of the equipment. The typical inspections can include the complete inspection of the mechanical, structural, electrical, and safety systems.
