NGO Benchmarking
In a time of questions about legitimacy, integrity and performance of non-governmental organizations, SGS has designed a Service Standard that aims at providing all stakeholders with the highest possible assurance that a given NGO's objectives and activities are implemented in an accountable, efficient and sustainable manner.

The purpose of NGO Benchmarking is to provide NGOs, as well as the donor community and the public at large, with an independent assessment based on a comprehensive set of perspectives, namely:

  • Dimensions of Best Practices:
Board of Trustees, Strategic Framework, Integrity Management, Communication and Public Image, Human Resources, Fund-Raising - Resources Allocation and Financial Controls, Outcomes, Operations and Continuous Improvement.
  • Contributors' Expectations:
    Transparency, Efficiency, Effectiveness
  • Management Components:
System, Activities (Programmes/Projects), Human Resources, Finance
  • Continuous Improvement:
    Plan, Do, Check, Act.

SGS measures compliance against a comprehensive set of Best Practices criteria (translated into Objectively Verifiable Indicators) taken from a large selection of Standards and eligibility requirements currently used by public sector agencies. A very unique methodology enables the audited NGO to translate its results into a focused Continuous Improvement program.

An SGS Certificate will be awarded, provided that:

  • The Institution reach a score above the 70% threshold,
  • The Institution does not show any major non-conformity (Criteria 1, 18, 19, 21, 60, 79, 89, 90 and 96 are fully compliant) and
  • The Institution has reached a minimum score of 50% on Dimensions 1- Board of Trustees, 2- Strategic Framework, 6- Fundraising, Resources Allocation and Financial Control and 7- Operations.

This SGS Certificate, as issued by an independent third-party, will allow the NGO to bring to any stakeholder the long awaited neutral and objective evidence about its overall integrity and performance.
