NDT - Magnetic Flux Leakage
The Objective
Storage of large quantities of hazardous substances entails risk for the population, the environment and the surrounding area. Examples are leakage from storage tanks containing gas, oil or chemicals, or the influence of the weather on the external surfaces of storage soils and tanks.
Material can also be affected by internal temperature variations. Therefore the condition of tanks, and in particular the tank bottom, is of outstanding importance.
The Solution
The basic principle of this Non-Destructive Test is that a strong magnet induces a magnetic field in the material. At areas where there is corrosion or missing metal, a leakage field will arise. The output from the detector can be electronically digitalized for automated inspection systems.
All indications is stored as well as their location. Bad plates or spots in plates can easily be identified and repaired. In the range 6 to 20 mm, all ferro-magnetic tank bottoms can be inspected, and (limited) coated surfaces also can be tested.
Application Areas
Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) is a method of Non-Destructive Testing, which is used to detect corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly pipelines and storage tanks.
MFL is a detection technique, which detects volumetrically changes. The disadvantage of Magnetic Flux Leakage is that no absolute values but relative volumetrically changes are reported. However it is a very suitable tool for detecting bad spots in the plates.
After the fast MFL inspection is done, only the “suspicious” areas of the tank bottom surface will be quantified by the slow but more accurate Ultrasonic Testing.
Why SGS?
SGS Industrial Services inspects tanks for conformity with all international construction codes and standards, such as API, BS, DIN, ASME, AD Merkblätter RTOD and is accredited according to EN 45004/ISO 17020.
SGS’ scope of services covers both conventional and advanced NDT systems, integrated into our Asset Integrity Management Services, available in more than 30 countries worldwide.
We understand that the excellence of any service commences with quality and the implementation of detailed and effective inspection procedures, state-of-the-art equipment and most of all our professional people.
Overview of NDT Services by SGS
Our Services for Magnetic Flux Leakage
To avoid an extremely dangerous situation, periodically conducted inspection is the right solution.
To minimize inspection time, SGS often combines more testing methods, in this case Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) with Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
By using these two techniques, corrosion is effectively detected and reliably quantified.
