The Objective

Defects and discontinuities in a material must be detected before they reach a critical size and so result in severe damage and expensive repair costs. For decades experts have studied 2D representations of materials to identify defects and possible causes of failure. 3D Tomography adds a new dimension to the recognition, sizing, and characterization of defects.

The Solution

3D Tomography was originally developed as a medical technology, but it also provides high added value in failure analysis, 3D modeling and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) validations.

Computed Tomography (CT) visualizes the physical structures in the interior of an object without physically opening or cutting it. This tool is extremely powerful for analyzing the root causes of failure. When other technologies need to be applied in the field or performance tests are conducted, 3D Tomography delivers excellent insight into the defect’s characteristics and calibration data. In particular, composite materials, light metals and smaller parts can be completely inspected and analyzed.

The X-ray generator and detector (Image Intensifier) are stationary and the sample is rotated during the examination. The digital detector registers hundreds of individual cross-sectional X-ray images from all angles and the computer reconstructs the inner-structural image.

High speed computers process the data into a complete 3D representation, which is comprehensive to understand and interpret. As the technology is still developing, both accuracy and object size are continuously improving.
