Australia Against the Use of Convertible Tricycles for Transportation

SafeGuardSAugust 29, 2018

The Australian ACCC has conducted a review of convertible tricycles. As a result, they warn carers not to use convertible tricycles to transport children, as they do not include important safety features required for the transportation of infants.

Convertible tricycles are toy tricycles with additional features, designed so that they can be used by carers to push children when they get tired of cycling. These features include push bars, freewheeling wheels or a footrest.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) is concerned that some suppliers, when offering these toys, give the impression that these convertible tricycles are suitable to transport children.

According to the ACCC, convertible tricycles include combinations of some key stroller functions (listed below) and lead consumers to believe that the product can therefore be used for transportation:

  • A high backrest for the child
  • A harness for the child
  • Ability to disengage child steering
  • Ability to disengage or remove the pedals
  • Ability to semi-recline or recline the child’s seat

However, these tricycles do not have the safety features required by the mandatory standard for strollers and may present a high risk to children.

The ACCC warns carers NOT to use convertible tricycles for transportation and has issued a press release to warn carers [1].

Suppliers of tricycles have received a letter informing them about the ACCC’s findings [2].
