Domestic Oven Gloves – CE Mark – PPE Updates 2018

SafeGuardSApril 11, 2018

Domestic oven gloves and mitts have been categorized for risk as Category II Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and regulated under the new PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 with effect from April 21, 2018.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is defined as equipment designed and manufactured to be worn or held by a person for protection against one or more risks to that person’s health or safety. Following the approval of Regulation (EU) 2016/425, domestic oven gloves and mitts have been now being categorized as PPE. Based on risk they are Category II PPE and therefore required to carry the CE mark and Conformity Assessment by a Notified Body before they can be sold in the EU.

Updated Planning for Transition

  • April 21, 2018 – it is a legal requirement that all new products placed into the market conform to Regulation (EU) 2016/425. They were not considered PPE under Directive 89/686/EEC.

Note: If the product bears the retailer’s logo, the retailer is said to be the manufacturer (company putting the product in the market) and therefore the supply chain only starts when they sell to their individual customers. Stock in their warehouse/distribution center is not yet in the supply chain and therefore cannot be sold after April 20, 2018 unless it has the CE mark and the Conformity Assessment.

As Category II products, oven gloves and mitts will require certification by a Notified Body before they can be sold in the EU. For Category II products, the necessary criteria for EU type-examination (Module B) are set out in Annex V, followed by conformity to type based on internal production control (Module C), set out in Annex VI. EU type-examination certificates issued under Module B in Annex V will have a validity period of five years.
