AAR Healthcare (AARHC) in Tanzania is one of East Africa’s largest providers of outpatient healthcare services. In August 2017, we provided AARHC with training to help it achieve its goal of becoming certified to ISO 15189:2012, the gold standard for medical laboratories around the world.

Delivered by SGS Academy in Tanzania, the training provided selected employees with both practical and theoretical knowledge. It included, but was not limited to:

  • The requirements of ISO 15189:2012
  • Effect of the standard on day to day lab operations
  • Interpretation and implementation of the requirements
  • The process based approach to auditing for compliance

Accreditation will allow AARHC to implement a uniformed approach toward determining laboratory competence and adopt internationally accepted measurement practices.

Bwiro Magesa, AAHRC’s quality assurance manager, commented on the success of the collaboration between AARHC and SGS. “It takes two hands to clap, two wings to fly and two legs to walk therefore together as a company we can now accomplish the goal of obtaining ISO 15189:2012 medical laboratories accreditation. Thanks to the training provided by SGS, we are now ready to implement the requirements to ensure a standardized measure for management practices throughout our clinics.”

About ISO 15189:2012

ISO 15189:2012 specifies requirements for quality and competence in medical laboratories. The standard can be used by medical laboratories to develop their quality management systems and assess their own competence. Laboratory customers, regulating authorities and accreditation bodies can use it to confirm or recognize medical laboratories’ competence.
