Mexico published NOM-231-SSA1-2016 setting limits on lead and cadmium in glass and ceramic articles distributed in Mexico. The new standard comes into force on December 24, 2016.

On January 15, 2015, we informed you that Mexico had proposed a new standard for Ceramics and Glassware sold in Mexico [1]. On October 25, 2016, the standard NOM-231-SSA1-2016, ARTICLES OF GLASS POTTERY, GLASS CERAMICS, PORCELAIN AND GLASS ARTICLES-MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE LIMITS OF SOLUBLE LEAD AND CADMIUM-TEST METHOD [2] was published in the National Gazette of the Federation of Mexico. Based on the date of publication, the requirements of the standard come into force on December 24, 2016.

The new standard applies to any type of glazed or unglazed pottery or glassware, colored or not, with or without decoration. Decoration locations subject to this standard include the interior, and exterior (lip and rim area) or both.

This new standard replaces the existing standard NOM-231-SSA1-2002 on food contact ceramics. It also expands the scope of products to include food contact glass and establishes limits for the migration of lead and cadmium in these products. The standard is aligned with international requirements:

  • ISO 6486-1: 1999 Ceramic ware, glass-ceramic ware and glass dinnerware in contact with food-Release of lead and cadmium-Part 1: Test method.

  • ISO 6486-2: 1999 Ceramic ware, glass-ceramic ware and glass dinnerware in contact with food-Release of lead and cadmium-Part 2: Permissible limits

  • ISO 7086-1: 2000 Glass hollowware in contact with food- Release of lead and cadmium-Part 1: Test method.

  • ISO 7086-2: 2000 Glass hollowware in contact with food-Release of lead and cadmium-Part 2: Permissible limits.
