Update: Safety of Children’s Clothing – Cords and Drawstrings

SafeGuardSAugust 31, 2015

EN 14682 was recently revised and updated with the publication of the 2014 version [1]. The new version of the European Standard will supersede EN 14682:2007 and was recommended for publication in the Official Journal of the European Union by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2015/1345 on 4th August 2015 [2].

As of the date of publication of EN 14682:2014 in the Official Journal, compliance with the revised harmonized standard: EN 14682:2014 provides a ‘presumption of conformity’ as defined in the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) with regard to the safety of children’s clothing and the specific hazards posed by cords and drawstrings.

The 2014 version of the standard has been amended and improved to resolve some of the questions of interpretation and implementation that arose from earlier versions and further expands and clarifies the requirements for cords and drawstrings in children’s clothing. EN 14682 defines requirements for cords and drawstrings for children’s clothing including disguise costumes and ski-wear intended to be worn by children up to the age of 14 years. The new version considers hazards due to cords and drawstrings in children’s clothing arising from all behaviour of children and encompasses how clothing may impact on the safety of a child during both indoor and outdoor play, as well as under ‘normal’ everyday wear. However, the standard does not apply to child use and child care articles, neckties, footwear, gloves, hats, scarves, bags, purses, belts (when sold separately), braces and religious clothing.
