SGS is pleased to announce that it has been chosen by Carbones del Cerrejón Limited to provide supervision services for civil expansion projects in Colombia. These services are to include construction, maintenance and design supervision. Having shortlisted five of the world's best supervision providers, SGS emerged as the preferred choice due to its superior knowledge and extensive experience in comparison to other competitors. The three-year contract, awarded on 28 June, was signed into effect on 5 July 2013.

Cerrejón is an integrated mining and transport complex in La Guajira located in the northernmost area of Colombia. The complex is made up of a thermal coal open-pit mine producing 32 million tons annually, a 150-kilometer long railroad and a maritime port able to receive ships carrying up to 180,000 tons of dead weight. Currently, SGS personnel is finishing up a six-month supervision contract for the construction of a new coal silo due to end in August.

SGS in Colombia

The Colombian project will start with 15 SGS professional staff including a director, engineers and field supervisors heading to the region. The number of personnel required for the project is expected to peak at 40. These skilled SGS experts will perform high-quality supervision to achieve substantial cost reduction.

Services will be provided at both the Guajira site and at the SGS main office in Bogota. SGS professionals will supervise in the three main areas of construction supervision, maintenance works supervision and design supervision.

Construction supervision is expected to focus on works at the port, as the existing port is too small and must be expanded. Maintenance supervision is to cover roads and buildings. Roads, both within the mine and those leading to the port, require regular maintenance. Over 700 buildings inside the complex used for offices, shops and employee housing must also be periodically maintained. Design supervision will involve inspecting and/or approving designs developed by a Cerrejón contracted company.

SGS Construction Supervision Services

Construction supervision provided by skilled and experienced SGS personnel will ensure that the Colombian project is completed on schedule and on budget and meets all the relevant regulations and quality standards. Professional SGS construction supervisors will tailor services to specifically safeguard the successful completion of the Cerrejón mining complex project by effectively controlling and supervising every aspect of the construction work.

Independent SGS construction supervision services will permanently place an experienced team of experts at the Colombian site to effectively implement and execute services according to national and international guidelines. The project will be kept on schedule, technical risks reduced and construction errors prevented. SGS supervisors will ensure compliance with relevant building regulations, quality standards and insurance company guidelines and assure Cerrejón project leaders that all work conforms to the specified technical documentation and the construction permit. SGS staff will then issue the Colombian partners appropriate and correct documents, certificates and declarations.

Whatever the size and wherever the location, SGS is able to provide any project extensive experience spanning all aspects of construction. When selecting support for construction projects, SGS is the first choice for public institutions, private investors, real estate owners and insurance and construction companies around the globe.

SGS is proud to assist Cerrejón in this distinguished project
