On April 2, 2013, a large construction company awarded SGS a contract to provide non-destructive testing (NDT) services to include ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing for welds and steel plates to be used in a 28 storey steel structure building in Taipei. Located in northern Taiwan, construction of the residential building is expected to take eight months, scheduled from June 2013 until January 2014. This agreement marks the first cooperation between SGS and this particular partner.

Non-Destructive Testing

Non-destructive testing is one of the most effective methods used for testing objects, materials and systems. NDT is implemented to assure compliance, identify defects and increase asset lifespan. Objects undergoing non-destructive inspection remain intact, making NDT a highly valuable technique saving both time and money during quality and safety evaluation procedures and raising confidence in component integrity. To properly ensure inspection reliability, highly-skilled NDT personnel and state of the art equipment are required by and essential to diverse industries.

Ultrasonic & Magnetic Particle Testing

SGS expert inspectors will introduce ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing NDT techniques to locate and measure defects during this project as well as provide quality assurance and process safety services.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) employs high frequency sound pulses emitted from a transducer. SGS inspectors induce a sound wave into the material through a probe which is usually in contact with the material. These sound waves propagate through the material and are reflected back to the probe when they reach an interface. Reflected waves are then transmitted to either an analogue or digital detector. A series of signals is then displayed on a monitor allowing qualified SGS examiners to measure and interpret these signal patterns for accurate evaluation of material internal structure. Critical components intended for use in the Taipei housing project will be thoroughly and accurately inspected using ultrasonic testing.

SGS investigators, using magnetic particle testing (MT), magnetize components undergoing inspection and apply ferromagnetic particles to the magnetized object surface. Attracted to areas of flux leakage (escaping magnetism), the particles move and group at a point indicating discrepancy. SGS experts use this method to test welds, castings and forgings for defects and flaws both on and slightly below the surface. Highly-skilled SGS inspectors will implement magnetic particle testing to accurately evaluate the integrity of vital welds, castings and forgings in the construction of the Taiwanese residential building.

Four SGS UT/MT Level II engineers will conduct NDT testing services both on-site at the construction location and in plants manufacturing elements to be used in the housing project.
