PT SGS Indonesia is pleased to announce that its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in Jakarta have recently been accredited by the National Accreditation Body of Indonesia (KAN).

As product recalls continue to make headlines around the world and governments continue to legislate to make products safer, food and consumer product industries urgently need reliable, technical solutions to help them reduce the risk of recall and meet strict regulatory requirements. SGS Indonesia’s Laboratory in Cilandak provides one of the highest levels of technical proficiency in Indonesia, considerably raising the benchmark by which other service providers are measured.

Since the 15th century the islands of Indonesia have supplied a rich variety of spices and commodities. As the largest archipelago in the world and perfect conditions for aquaculture, Indonesia remains an important source of fish exports to Japan, the US and the EU. Ranked 4th in terms of population size, the country has been able to reasonably weather the global downturn due to its large, consumer-driven domestic market.

The Jakarta laboratory is capable of providing in depth analysis using chemical, microbiological and physical testing methods for raw or processed food commodities and products destined for export or domestic consumption. The SGS Jakarta laboratory employs highly qualified personnel with broad experience in their respective fields. Analyses follow international methods using advanced instruments capable of very low levels of detection.

As Indonesia’s long term economic future looks healthy, one of the main objectives for SGS is to invest in building the most advanced testing capabilities in Indonesia. The Jakarta laboratory is part of this vision to provide some of the most sophisticated sample measurement equipment in Indonesia. This will deliver very low detection levels, a key need for many clients looking for technical solutions to help them comply with ever-stringent requirements of foreign buyers and international regulators.
By this accreditation the SGS Cilandak laboratory has demonstrated its ability to meet the rigorous standards set by ISO and administered by KAN. These standards have carefully evaluated test methodologies, operational practices and the technical ability of laboratories all over the world. Like other proficient laboratories in the global, reputed network of SGS Laboratories, the Cilandak facilities will help food and consumer product companies to reduce risk and meet regulatory standards of health, safety and the environment.

In early 2009 SGS demonstrated the accuracy of its testing methods and rapid turnaround times in detecting and measuring veterinary drugs and heavy metals in shrimp, fulfilling performance criteria as stipulated by European Union regulations. In recognition of the confidence in our technical capabilities, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Republic of Indonesia (Departemen Kelautan dan Perikanan or DKP) has approved the Cilandak laboratory as an official subcontractor for the testing of fish products for export markets.

In relation to this technical distinction, the SGS Indonesia laboratory and certification teams hosted the US FDA in August 2009 for the Pilot Program for Third Party Certification of Aquaculture Shrimp Processors, and related testing laboratories. By demonstrating the British Retail Consortium (BRC) audit scheme in complement to the technical expertise of its laboratory, SGS Indonesia has achieved an elite status in the global supply chain for participation in the quality assurance of shrimp exports to the US market.

The laboratory is also capable of servicing the needs of importers of fresh produce and meat products who, according to the recent Decree 27 of the Director General of Quarantine, must demonstrate that their products are pesticide free in order to gain market access in Indonesia.
