Geostatistics and Block Modeling

Accurate resource estimation is crucial for the success of an exploration project. SGS has earned the reputation as a world leader in orebody modeling, block modeling, geometallurgy and geostatistical analysis. The data gained from these activities provide you with an accurate evaluation of your project reserves and resources.

SGS professionals perform geostatistical analysis and block modeling using the data generated through orebody modeling. Our geological professionals act as your Qualified Person (QP) or Competent Person (CP) and can prepare reports that are NI 43-101 and JORC compliant.

Block Modeling

Generally, the first step is to produce a set of drill-hole sections from the drill-hole database. These sections are then used to verify the project data and then to establish interpreted geological limits for various ore and rock types. The next step is to divide those geological zones into blocks and estimate the tonnage and grades of each block. The shape of blocks and the estimation methods vary according to the specific requirements of your project.

Geostatistical Analysis

The information gained from geostatistical analysis is the base data for ore resource calculation and grade control. The analysis begins with our examination of the data produced by orebody modeling. We then:

  • Composite drill hole samples in standardized interval lengths
  • Examine histograms and correlation diagrams of composite grades
  • Calculate 2- or 3-D variograms
  • Perform conditional simulation or kriging

The resulting information can be used to:

  • Determine a capping value in precious metal deposits with outliers
  • Establish the precision of resource estimates and improve it with fill-in drilling if possible
  • Pool different sample information (drill-hole versus channel or muck) in the block grade interpolation
