Compliance with the EMC Directive is a mandatory requirement for CE marking within Europe and is fast becoming mandatory for an increasing range of products for countries outside the EU, such as the USA or Asia.

EU directive 89/336/EC sets the rules for all equipment and systems which use electricity, from battery operated products to high voltage installations. Some exceptions do exist for products which have their own EMC criteria:

• Medical devices (EU directive 90/385/EC, 93/42/EC and 98/79/EC)
• The emissions aspects of motor cars (EU directive 72/245/EC)
• Non-automatic weighing instruments (EU directive 90/384/EC)
• Automotive EMC Directive (95/54/EC)
