EU Toy Directive

On 30 June 2009 the new EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC was published. New requirements have been effective since 20 July 2011. Chemicals in toys being a more complicated area, the chemical requirements will come into force on 20 July 2013 and during this transitional period old Directive 88/378/EEC will continue to apply.

As a result you need to stay ahead of regulatory changes and be sure that your toys comply with the new requirements.

At SGS we can help. We offer dedicated services for the new EU toy safety directive to cover all your needs, from the concept/design stage of the product, to its intended market:

  • Training (seminars/presentations, safety/risk assessment on your own)
  • Consultancy (safety/risk assessment, safety data sheet (SDS) preparation)
  • Labeling review
  • Technical documentation validation
  • Testing/Pre-shipment testing
  • Factory audits and inspections

The objective of the new directive is to reduce toy related accidents by identifying hazards in toys not covered by the standards, taking into account the foreseeable use, bearing in mind children’s behavior.

As the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company our toy laboratories are internationally recognized by major industry associations and accreditation bodies. In addition our toy labs are strategically located in key manufacturing zones and transit points worldwide. Take advantage of SGS’s technical expertise and global experience in toy safety regulations and ensure that your products meet the new requirements of the new toy directive (EN 71 toy safety standard has been updated) as well as other legislation that could apply to your toys, including REACH.
