Challenge Tests

An important part of the development of cosmetic products is demonstrating that the product is safe for use and is not at risk of microbiological contamination. SGS challenge tests examine the antimicrobial effectiveness of your products on different germs, and are conducted to meet your own specifications and the requirements of pharmacopeia across the globe, including USP, Colipa and AFNOR. They also address the needs of regulations such as the 7th Amendment to the Cosmetic Directive 76/768 in Europe.

Our challenge tests are conducted by experts in their field at one of our many world-class laboratories. Samples are prepared with preservative, and inoculated separately with strains of bacteria and fungi which may occur under normal customer use conditions, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, mold and yeast. Our aim is to test whether your product is safe to use without risk of contamination for the full product life once it is opened.

SGS challenge tests can be carried out on the full range of cosmetic products, and it is advisable to conduct tests as early as possible in product development.
