PLASTICISERS IN SOFT AND FLEXIBLE PRODUCTS
The use of certain phthalates in toys and childcare items is banned in various countries, including in Europe.
What are Phthalates? Phthalates are principally added to make stiff plastics softer. Soft PVC may contain 20% to 60% softener (Phthalate). Before the regulation, soft PVC often was used in toys and child care articles. The best known application of phthalates is to soften PVC. The most often used softener is DEHP.

Effects on health The phthalates used nowadays have a low acute toxicity. Long-term ingestion studies conducted on rats and mice showed that di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) promotes cancer. DEHP, DBP and BBP have been identified as toxic substances for Reproduction. The scientific information regarding DINP, DIDP and DONP is either lacking or in conflict, but they have been regulated because it can not be excluded that they pose a potential risk.
