PRIORITY ON PERFORMANCE, COMPATIBILITY, STABILITY AND SAFETY
In the household and in industrial applications, all laundry detergents and cleaning and care products are evaluated in regard to product performance, material compatibility, stability and safety. In addition, legislators, consumers and retailers place increasingly higher demands on the quality of the raw materials and auxiliary agents and their products.
Products Covered
- Laundry detergents (washing liquids, powders, etc)
- Household and surfaces (toilet cleaners - PDF 175 KB): gels, liquids, cube for bowl - solid or liquid product, with or without bleach-, “blue water” cube for flush, etc)
- Cleaning accessories (cleaning gloves, toilet tissues, bin liners, etc)
- Interior perfumes and deodorants (air fresheners, incense, etc)
SGS offers a wide range of testing services: A) PHYSICO-CHEMICAL TESTS
- Surfactants (soaps, etc)
- Bleaches
- Builder (silicates, phosphates, etc)
- Complexing agents
- Perfume oils
- Fats & oils
- Preservatives
- Solvents (ethanol, acetone, glycols, etc)
- Contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, etc)
Cleaning accessories: we conduct performance tests such as mechanical resistance (tensile, bursting, tearing strength) on bin liners, sponges, etc.
B) TOXICOLOGICAL TESTS SGS experts review hazards from the full ingredient list and conduct risk assessment based on the exposure route. It enables for instance to study the dermal (skin) irritation of a washing liquid.
Tests being performed on human skins, such studies could not be conducted on basic or acidic detergents.
Ocular (eye) and dermal (skin) irritation tests:
- Red Blood Test (RBC)
- HET-CAM Test
- Human Patch Test
- Repeated Human Patch Test
- Inner Ellbow Wash Test
- Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)
- Skin Redness (CIE-Lab)
Dermal (skin) tests:
- Skin Humidity (Corneometer)
- Skin Roughness (PRIMOS)
- Wrinkle Depth (PROMOS 3D)
- Skin Elasiticity (Cutometer)
- Efficacy versus free Radicals (Anti-Aging) (Squalenhydroperoxide Method)
- Deodorant Efficiency (Sniff Test)
- Panel Testing (Screening, 5 panellists)
- Panel Testing with Questionnaire (20 panellists)
C) ECOTOXICOLOGY AND BIODEGRADABILITY TESTS (environment) Ecotoxicological tests and studies on biodegradability are used to record the quality of raw materials and end products as well as to detect possible effects of materials and applications on different environmental compartments.
- Ecotoxicology Testing
SGS studies toxic effects of consumer products (caused by natural or synthetic pollutants) to the constituents of ecosystems, animal, vegetable and microbial.
Standards: DIN 38412 T8, T27, T34, OECD 201, OECD 202, OECD 203, ISO 9509, T1
- Biodegradability Testing
SGS can test degradability behaviour through environmental microbes according to the following methods: Ready biodegradability (OECD 301 A-F), inherent biodegradability (OECD 302), simulation test (OECD 303), anaerobic degradation (e.g. EPA test CG 2050, OECD 311), biodegradability in sea water (OECD 306).
D) Ecolabel Testing (Detergents) The Eco-label concerns raw materials. It requires the compliance with the EU regulation 648/2004/EC on Detergents. Several regulations exist for the delivery of European Ecolabel for detergents. The Eco-label is the official EU mark for greener products.
