PPE CERTIFICATION - CONSUMER PRODUCTS

DON’T TAKE THE RISK. PROTECT THE WEARER.

Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) is defined in the Regulations as any device or appliance designed to be worn or held by an individual for protection against one or more health risks and safety risks. PPE is categorized into different risk levels for assessment.

PPE Directive
The PPE Directive 89/686/EEC was consolidated into 1 document in 2002 and was implemented in each EC Member state under national legislation.

Aims of the PPE Directive:

  • Marking of PPE with CE mark to indicate compliance with the ‘essential requirements’ for health and safety. Know more about CE Marking.

  • Verification of conformance with essential requirements by way of "Self certification”; “Type Approval”; or “EC Quality Control System”.

  • Providing power to prohibit supply or sale, or to require removal of non-compliant PPE from market.

  • Directive applies to both new and refurbished PPE.

PPE Requirements

  • Must satisfy the basic health and safety requirements for that class or type of PPE.

  • A presumption of conformity exists for standards published in the Official Journal (O.J.). of the European Union.

  • Where no harmonised standard exists, the ratified European Standard may be used (may not satisfy all of essential requirements).

  • If no EN standard then pr EN standard may be used, other National Standard or in-house specification.

There may be additional requirements to be met such as generic standards for specific product categories.
