Weight determination

SGS provides inspection of weight determination at most ports and major inland trans-shipment points. Whether you are selling, buying or transporting coal or coke, SGS is ready to assist and independently verify your shipment weight.

When establishing the value of a parcel that is being bought or sold, the weight is always determined first. It must be determined in a manner which is fair to both parties. SGS weights are traceable to a known calibration and check weights.

Ways of determining weight include:

  • Static Weighbridges
  • Dynamic Weighbridges
  • Belt Scales
  • Hopper Scales
  • Draft Survey

Through local knowledge and past experience, SGS staff can advise clients of the best system. SGS staffs are trained to monitor the performance of the weighing system and to check this performance against items with known weights and recent calibration data. Detailed field records are kept of all data used to determine the final declared weight. These are made available to you upon your request. For instance, when weight is determined by draft survey, only trained SGS draft surveyors or approved sub-contracted mariners are used. These personnel use the approved SGS Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) guidelines for the determination of weight by draft survey.

A certificate of weight is supplied by SGS after a complete and successful weighing process has occurred.
